The Bad Mice mini book is a collaboration between miniature artist Ingvild Eiring and wetplate photographer Julie Loen. It’s a limited edition book (only 20 numbered copies made), featuring 22 wetplate photographs of 12 different dioramas. The book measures only 4,5x3,5x1,5cm!

Ingvild has been making 1:12 scale box dioramas, haunted by hand sculpted mice, since 2011. They may look cute at first glance... but look again! They are, indeed, bad mice. Welcome to a world of grim vignettes, often in a Victorian setting, filled with madness and monsters.

Julie has made wetplates since 2016. The photographic technique wetplate collodion was invented in 1851 and is “the look” that defines the Victorian photograph. The process involves darkroom work with liquid chemicals and long exposure times. What better way to capture Victorian mice in their crimes?

The covers are handmade by Ingvild. The cover of the book you see in the example photos is just one of the 20 books we have made. Because Ingvild has painted each cover by hand, not one looks exactly the same. The cover of the book you receive will be similar to but not exactly the same as the one you see here (unless you are the one person to receive this particular book).

The book comes in a box with a pretty bow. We have included a magnifying glass, so you can get a closer look at the horror and madness. If you don’t know where to keep such a unique, tiny book - don’t worry - it has a magnet on the back, so you can put it on the fridge!

Please keep in mind the size of the book. It will probably not look its best blown out of proportions on a big screen. You’ll get a better idea of what it actually looks like on your phone.

Exclusively available at The Kittelsen Museum from May 11th to September 22nd 2024, during Ingvild's exhibition “Titteskapelser.”
