War Barbie - The Video

I submitted a modified, old Barbie doll to a kitbashing competition before Halloween last year. I didn’t win but I’m delighted to say that I was among the runner-ups! I had a lot of fun de- and reconstructing one of my old toys. I even made a little video of War Barbie, check it out here. Video is a fairly new format for me but I really enjoyed making this one, and I have lots of ideas for other short diorama videos.

Mother Decay in Beautiful Bizarre

I submitted one of the images from my Mother Decay project to Beautiful Bizarre’s art prize. There are so many talented artists who have submitted their work, so I don’t expect to win anything but I was delighted to have my work featured on their entries page! You can see it here, you have to scroll down a fair bit but there’s lots of cool art to see along the way!

Mother Decay is a project I’ve been working on since 2018, with Ingvild Eiring as the model. This particular image is a tintype (wetplate collodion) but I’ve also shot a number of Polaroids for the project and am still working on the story.

New Portraits of Siri Pettersen

I did a new portrait session with author Siri Pettersen earlier this month. She has several new books coming out soon, so she needed new pictures for promotion etc. We did the shoot at beautiful Bristol Hotel in Oslo. This one is my favorite. I don’t really do this kind of work any more but it’s hard to say no when one of my favorite authors ask.

Spring Cleaning

I started spring cleaning early this year… well, digital spring cleaning.

I’ve made a goodbye post on my Wordpress blog jcloen.com. The site will still be there until it expires in September but I’ll do all my posting here from now on.

I’ve permanently closed my little online curiosity shop Obskura Kuriosum. I had big plans for it but then life changed dramatically with a new job, years of pandemic and moving house.

I’ve handed over the job as admin for Wetplate Darlings on Instagram to someone I believe to be very capable. I created it several years ago when there were no other pages dedicated to posting wetplate collodion work in a gallery on Instagram but I’ve left it hanging for a couple of years already with the intention of picking it up again without doing so. It was about time to let it go.

It feels good to “tidy” up in these things and I’m looking forward to, what I hope to be, a more creative year than the past few.

Hello!

Welcome to my brand new news section! I’ve decided to tidy up my internet presence and put all my “stuff” here at julieloen.com. I’ve tidied up the website and made room for my literary escapades here as well. In the past few years I’ve developed a passion for making dioramas, so you’ll also find images of my 3D work here. I’ll be posting news about all three of my passions - photography, dioramas and writing on my western series.

I have a vast collection of images but I don’t want my website to be an archive of everything I’ve ever done. I’ll try to keep it current with images that are relevant to the work that I’m currently working on and are interested in making more of.

I’ve got some exciting new things coming up soon, so stay tuned!
